ABOUT TOEFL
What is TOEFL ?
The Test Of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is an examination that is administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) and used to evaluate a nonnative English speaker’s proficiency in the English language. An acceptable score on the TOEFL test depends on the specific requirements of the particular institution or agency involved. The test comes in two formats, the paper based test and the computer-based test.
The TOEFL test scores are required for students who wish to work at the graduate level in various countries. The test taker is required to make a prior registration at the test center to avoid inconvenience. The scores are valid for two years. The computer based TOEFL test has two sections namely the Listening section and the Structure section that are based on Computer Adaptive Test (CAT) format.
What is The CAT ?
In the CAT format of the exam the computer chooses problems based on a candidate’s responses to previous questions. This makes the CAT “adaptive” or “interactive”. CAT selects questions according to each candidate’s ability .The questions are broadly classified as easy, moderately difficult and very difficult. Because the CAT is it uses fewer items and takes less time to administer than the paper-based version.

Simply putting, the computer has access to a large number of test items classified according to question types (antonyms, reading comprehension etc.)And arranged in order of difficulty. The start of the test the computer presents the examinee with “seed” questions, items of average difficulty level .If these are answered successfully then the program selects for the next question an item of greater difficulty .On the contrary, if the “seed” questions are not answered successfully, then the program lowers the difficulty level by selecting a question from the lower difficulty range. Needless to say that because of such an adaptation it is very important to start the test with greatest accuracy.

What types of Questions are on the TEST ?
The questions can be broadly classified as-
LISTENING (40 – 60 minutes) - The section has the following subsections- Short Dialogues – There are approximately 11 – 17 passages with one question each. Short Conversations – There are approximately 2 – 3 passages with two to three questions each. Lectures and discussions - There are approximately 4 – 6 passages with three to six questions each.

This section is based on Computer Adaptive Test (CAT) format
STRUCTURE (15- 20 minutes) - The section has the following subsections- Completing sentences correctly . There are 10 – 15 items on this. Identifying Errors- There are 10 – 15 items on this. The total number of questions is approximately 20 to 25 in total.

This section is based on Computer Adaptive Test (CAT) format
READING (70 – 90 minutes) - There are 4-5 passages with 10 – 12 questions each and approximately 44- 55 questions in the entire subsection.

This section is not based on Computer Adaptive Test (CAT) format
WRITING (30 minutes) - the test taker is required to write one essay in this section.
In the computer based TOEFL the writing score is a component of the score for the structure section .
TOEFL (COMPREHENSIVE)
The TOEFL comprehensive program is designed to cater to the needs of candidates who are new to the test and have very little knowledge about the various aspects of the test. It aims at molding the candidate according to the specific requirements of the TOEFL, which is a test very different from other tests. The program formulators have in depth knowledge about the TOEFL and are at a very good position to direct the candidate according to the specific requirements of the test from a very basic level. Since the TOEFL is a language based test, a lot of emphasis is given on the correct usage of the language.
The program includes -
CLASSROOM TEACHING
The classroom teaching aims at bolstering the basics of the test taker in the fields of English language usage and its paraphernalia. Past experience has shown that a very dependable way to be successful at the TOEFL is to inculcate strong basics in the various sections of TOEFL. The regular classroom training along with handy tips during the classes ensure that the test taker is fully prepared.
SIMULATED TOEFL TESTS
A person enrolling in the comprehensive program virtually takes 25 to 30 computer based tests before the actual TOEFL. This allows the candidate to be comfortable during the test. The TOEFL simulated tests ensure that the test taker can efficiently manage his time.
TOEFL (SIMULATIVE)
The TOEFL computer simulative test is designed for test takers who are fully confident of their preparation for the TOEFL and need only virtual tests to enhance their performance. The program formulators assume that the candidate has good command over the basics of English language and its usage and hence no classroom teaching is provided. The soft wares given to the test takers are the most advanced in the area of testing and are good indicators of the test performance. A person enrolling in this program takes 25 to 30 computer based tests before the actual TOEFL.
